On the streets of Exeter, spontaneous conversations often uncover passions that completely transform how we experience time and focus. In this feature, we meet Jack to talk about his transition into jewellery design, how he overcame long-term mental health hurdles, and how he found power in small daily habits.
For Jack, feeling alive and grounded comes down to the flow state of creating his own jewellery:
"Right now, my passion what keeps me going, & more so the piece of it as-well, is making my own jewellery... It's a unique concept, and when I'm doing that, everything just disappears... I can spend like anywhere from one to eight hours in the time just flies by. Doing that just makes me feel alive, it makes me feel grounded."
Reflecting on his journey with mental health, Jack shares an honest look at dealing with depression and anxiety since his teens, and how he learned to rebuild self-love:
"I have dealt with depression & anxiety since I was about 15-16. I'm now 32... It's very difficult to get control of your own mind when you reach the lowest of lows. For me it just took dedication & learning to love myself again... you've got to start off with the little things. First sip of coffee in the morning, sunshine on your face when you wake up."
Closing our conversation, Jack shares a practical and motivating message for anyone looking to build momentum in their life:
"1% a day makes a difference... whether that's picking up the clothes you left on the floor... to brushing your teeth that extra 30 seconds, you'll suddenly realise how much that 1% adds up & makes you feel so much better about yourself."
