Inside Portal Pizza on Central Station Buildings with Jack and Emily
Independent spots that bring creative culinary twists add incredible flavour to the city. In this feature, we visit Portal Pizza to chat with founders Jack and Emily about their expanding locations, hybrid pizza style, and commitment to local suppliers.
From their horsebox at Topsham Brewery and Magdalen Road restaurant to their newest cafe at Central Station, the team focuses on a family-friendly atmosphere:
"We're Portal Pizza, we've got horsebox at Topsham Brewery, Magdalen Road restaurant, & now we've opened a cafe at Central Station... We're family friendly restaurant trying to serve up the best pizzas using local supplies."
Drawing inspiration from London pizzerias, their unique dough bridges two classic pizza traditions:
"Took inspiration from a lot of like London pizzerias... have like a hybrid of Neapolitan & New York style pizza, slightly crisper, but retains that chewy Neapolitan style... puffy crust."
Whether grabbing a quick slice on the way into town or settling in for a half-and-half large pizza, customers keep coming back for fan favourites like The Smokey Mountain:
"By the slice, so you can pick it up on your way into town... On our large pizzas, we do a half & half as well... It's often pepperoni... we got a pizza called The Smokey Mountain which is smoked pepperoni, smoked cheese & hot honey, that is our biggest seller."
Looking ahead, the focus remains on consistency and perfecting their craft across all sites:
"I think it's really perfecting each one now... making sure we consistently make the best pizzas."
