What Makes Charlie Alive?

On Exeter's streets, spontaneous conversations with local youth often reveal a deep appreciation for culture, music, and genuine human connection. In this feature, we speak with Charlie about what brings vitality and excitement to his days.

For Charlie, feeling alive is driven by meeting new people, attending events, and enjoying walks with good music:

"Just meeting new people, going to events, & just listening to music... I like going out on walks & just enjoying everything... I get to meet people that have similar interests... the culture behind them, I like seeing how happy people get out the events."

Opening up about personal challenges, Charlie shares his experience living with autism and how he navigates daily life with determination:

"I have autism, so it makes everyday things a bit more difficult, but it's just learning to manage that, & learning how to use it in a good way. Just not letting me stop doing everyday things... if I'm finding something difficult, I make sure to push myself through it, because otherwise I'll just go home & never be able to do it if I give up."

Closing our conversation, Charlie shares an encouraging and steadfast message for the world:

"Just keep trying, whatever you're doing... eventually you'll get there, everything will get better eventually, the world will keep spinning either way... just keep going, keep doing what you're doing."
